2 month check-up!

Last Wednesday, October 6th, Logan had a follow up with his neurosurgeon. He felt around Logans cute little head and and took a few measurements and said that everything looks great! In Dr. Greene's words "he has a perfectly fat head!" That is music to my ears :-D Never really thought that I would be happy to hear that, but it is much better than what he had! We are scheduled to get x-rays and another visit in December! It feels so good to be on the other side with a perfectly healed head! He even said that Logan has good genes because he healed beautifully! I reallllyyy liked the sound of that lol! Here is Logan's Neurosurgeon, Dr. Clarence Greene!

Also, here a few updated pictures of the little head :-)

As you can see Logan was Baptized recently- on 9/26! His little head is just so adorable, well in my eyes at least!

2 Weeks Post-Op & Appt

Wednesday- 8/25/10 was Logan's Post-Op appointment with the surgeon! Mommy was especially excited about this appointment because I was eager to show off my baby boys new head! Dr. Greene seemed very impressed with the way things turned out! After touching and pressing on his little head and examining the incision he said he is definitely on the right track! YAY! However, he did tell me that mommy is being a little to gentle with the incision, because the stictches should be more dissolved than they are! oooppss! So he told me to get a little more aggressive when washing his hair to help the stitches to dissolve. So now when washing that little head I have to use a baby brush and basically scrub the incision! I think he likes it tho-- maybe it itches :-) Anywho, everything looked just perfect and he will be seen in 6 weeks for a follow up and xrays!

1 week Post-Op!

Today made a week since Logan's Saggital Craniectomy and I can honestly say that I am completely besides myself! I never in a million years thought that something so small could heal so fast! Everyone I talked to who whether it be on a support site, or a personal friend kept telling me that babies are so resilient and that I would be impressed! I believed every word they said, but I never thought it would be to this extreme! He is completely medicine free other than the antibiotic ointment that I apply to his head 2x's daily! He only required 2 doses of narcotic pain medication and occasional tylenol there after! The results have also been extremely remarkable! Basically, it has been a "night & day" transformation and I am just so completely impressed!

Just to note for Logan in the future-- At one week post-op, Mommy applies the antibiotic ointment to your entire incision when you wake up in the morning. I place a soft cotton hat over the insision just to hold the ointment in place. We go about our daily routine like nothing ever happened! That consist of watching bubbie play and of course eating and pooping :-D Every evening I give you a bath. I sterilize the tub each time, use sterile wash clothes, and the foam head to toe Johnson's to Johnson's! I wet your hair, apply the shampoo and gently rub in circular motions. I let the soap sit on your head while I bathe you! Bathing you now is a little more difficult because I am having to watch your incision very closely... not allowing it to touch the un-sterile water! After you are completely clean I rinse your hair. (your tub came with a shower head attachment, so I use that to rinse your hair) The water used is in a seperate bucket that has not been touched by germs. Drying you off, I get you completely dry, except for your head. Diaper you, lotion you up, and get your nighties on... I then take Bounty paper towels and blot your insicion dry-- Bounty PT's because they are sterile and they absorb nicely. Once all dry, I apply your antibiotic ointment and put a clean hat on your little head! :-D

The incision looks great! Hard to believe something so scary and gruesome could look so nice ;-)

Here is a picture of you at 1 week post-op!

Less than 48 hours &............

We are home!!!!!!!
Yes, you read that right... Less than 48 hours after Logan's operation, he was discharged from the hospital and we are home! All I can say is Thank You God! Logan's Dr. was completely impressed with his progress and the way he was healing! He told me that normally for the surgery he had, it is a minimal 4 day stay!! BUT, not my little figter... he left a whole 2 days earlier that the average! I never really thought I could be this proud of someone so small. He has very minimal swelling, and I mean minimal. He went 16 hours without any pain medicine at all, even tylenol. After the 16th hour, I opted to give him a dose just to be safe, and good thing I did because not even 10 minutes later we got the okay to come home! I was really worried about the ride home and nervous that he would be in pain, but not my little angel! He slept the whole time :-) When we got home I was instruction to give him a bath and was his hair. I think that was the most nervous I have ever been! It was probably one of the hardest things I've had to do in a while. He did pretty good despite the large incision on the top of his little head! He did cry, which is not normal for him, but I guess that was to be expected!

Anywho, we are scheduled to see Dr. Greene again 8/25. That will be his official post-op visit, and I cant wait to see his results! The results so far have been utterly amazing and I am so impressed! Here are some pictures of us going home :-)

Logan's Surgery 8/14/10 at OneTrueMedia.com

Remarkable!

The Before picture was taken at 7 a.m the morning of surgery! The POST picture was taken 14 hours later, SAME DAY, just 6 hours POST surgery!!! Absoloutely UNBELIEVABLE!

a NOTE to my Sweetie :-D

My sweet Logan,

My oh my, what a tough little fighter you are! Mommy always knew that you were born to be strong, but Im definitely seeing that I was right all along! It has been 36 hours since your surgery took place and I am utterly amazed at how great you are doing! Right after your surgery when you were getting settled into your room you were in a great deal of pain! Your little cries were not so little anymore.. They were heart shattering! My poor angel, the pain seemed so unbearable and all mommy could do was look on as the nurses continued their job in the torture chamber! So many times I had to hold myself back from just running to your crib and scooping you into my arms, but I knew that those sweet nurses were torturing you for all the right reasons! They were caring for my angel when mommy wasnt strong enough too!! Upon leaving recovery, they administered some narcotic pain medicine (the good stuff as they called it) into your IV for a less painful ride upstairs. It started to work, but any little move, touch, noise, bright light, would startle you and you would again start to cry! The cry that NO mother wants to hear coming from their angel! I sat back and prayed! Please God, you got him through the operation safe and sound and I praise you for that, now if its not to much to ask, can you please take away his pain! Not 5 minutes later the nurse--also referred to as your angel, came in and said "Mom, I think I might know how to take away his pain," she smiled.. "Are you ready to hold your little one!" Without hesitation I exclaimed, "YES!" And so I did--

The second she placed you into my arms your little sleepy eyes opened and looked right at me! I felt my heart melt away and felt my warm tears run down my face. We were whole again! From that moment on, I never let go. I was so relieved that Daddy was too scared to hold you, because I didnt know if I could bare to share you with anyone :-) but Daddy didnt mind! He sat there next to us, holding your little hand and whispering how amazing you were and how proud he was of you! If there is one thing about Daddy, he may have a tough exterior, but when it comes to his boys, and mommy, he is a softy ;-)! The whole first night, I held you in my arms, and it was truly magical! No tears from your little eyes and no cries from your little lips, you were content-- in mommys arms!

Right now, you are laying in your metal prison crib, sound asleep. The only reason you arent still in my arms is because the swelling is making it hard to lay on mommy, where as being propped up with a soft pillow seems a little less painful right now! Your swelling isnt as bad as I prepared myself for. There is definitely some there, but your precious eyes can still open and no little bruises just yet! You have plenty of nurses who just walk in to see the cute little baby in room 404, and I dont think you mind the attention! You were caught flirting a time or two, just like that Big Bubbie of yours!!!! Throughout the day you had a few visitors... First was your Bubbie & NeNe! Bubbie got you two really cute "Get Well" balloons and got himself a coloring book, colors, and candy ;-)! After they left your MeMe (aunt Amy) & your Nanny Ashley & cousin John came to see you! Cousin John (aka Lil John) was born just last week and was one of your very first visitors. Mommy held you and him at the same time so yall could have a play date, but it was more like a "sleep" date lol! After they had gone home, another knock at the door. It was mommy's high school friend and her husband who came to visit next! Unfortunatly their current address is Children's Hospital--floor 6, as their 20 month old daughter has been here due to a swimming pool accident! But they stayed for a while and commented several times on how adorable you were, and they are indeed right :-) Shortly after they left, Daddy did too. He had to go to work :-/. But that was okay, because Mawmaw came to fill the void! She stood at your bedside for a good hour talking to you and making you smile real big! You are totally eating up this attention!!

Also, today you had two blood transfusions-- both of which were a success! You did so good during both and had no negative reactions to the blood! In fact, it was your NeNe's O+ blood that you recieved! Unfortunately Daddys "O+" blood turned out to be "A+" like Mommy, so he couldnt give you his! But luckily, NeNe has the same blood type as you and she was your blood donor. Also, you are only on tylenol right now for pain tolerance, and you seem to be responding to that pretty good. No more scarey cries, just a little fussy when you are ready to eat or need to burp or have a wet diaper! Another thing... There is a remarkable difference in the shape of your head already, and was so immediately after surgery! Very overwhelming and exciting!

So my sweet son, overall, your first 36 hours POST surgery have been lots of things-- painful, scary, exhausting, eventful, BUT most of all REWARDING! Continue to be tough my "little fighter" and soon we will be home where mommy will get you right back into the swing of things :-)

I love you my sweet angel and could not be prouder of you!
Love Always,
Your Mommy-xoxo

Blood Work Results....

The nurse just informed me that Logan's latest blood test that was performed at 8p.m. was in the "normal" range, so no more blood transfusions!!! YAYYYY!

Blood Transfusion.

After Logan's 6a.m. labs came back the doctor prescribed him to have a blood transfusion. He told me that his levels were pretty low and he would require some "new" red blood cells to level everything out. So this morning at 11, they started his first bag. The doctor ordered him to have 80 cc's total, then repeat the test and take it from there. So at 11 he was given 41 cc's, and now 5 hours later he is recieving 44 cc's (5 extra for good luck ;-) ) It will take two and half hours for the blood to run through, then they will repeat the test then. Fingers crossed that his levels will stay in the normal range, but the doctor believes this will do the trick! As of now he isn't losing much blood, just small amounts from his drainage tube. Hopefully that will be coming out tomorrow!

Night ONE--

All I can say is WOW! Everyone I talked to who has been through this before said that the first night is the hardest, THEY WERE RIGHT! Shortly after getting into his room and getting familiarized with the nurses they asked if I wanted to hold him... I said "PLEASE"! I sat in the big blue chair and they finally handed me my little angel back!

The first 6 hours or so that we were in the room were very difficult. More than once I felt myself beginning to break hearing the painful cries of my little angel! The hardest part was knowing that there wasnt very much that I could do to make it better, but to just hold him and comfort him, so i did! The way I had to hold him was not in a comfortable position because they still had his little head supported, but my heart was so full of warmth and love that it didnt bother me much! I knew it was not only good for me, but GREAT for him! About an hour later the nurse asked if I wanted a break and I quickly replied NO! She giggled and said, I love when babies have mommies like you! My goal was to hold him until either my bladder was about to burst or my arm was falling offf... the bladder won! Aboout 3 hours later the nurse put him back in his crib where he stayed for maybe 20 minutes! Then back to mommies arms for the remainder of the night!

Daddy stayed the night with us tonight... he slept most of the time lol... you can take a man out of his bed, but you cant stop him from sleeping :-D. It's okay though because mommy really wasnt in a sharing mood ;-) Daddy said he was a little scared to hold him, which is completely understandable! Mommy was too! But I set my fears aside and Im so thankful I did!

Throughout the night the pulse ox machine kept dinging so we seen alot of the nurses :-) They didnt mind! At about 8 am Dr. McBride and one of her partners came in to check him over! She told me that he looks amazing with very minimal swelling! She then said, "I think we can pat mommy on the back for that one!" That made my day! Then she proceeded to tell us that he would need to blood transfusion today because his levels were really low! They are about to start that soon! Right now, he is sound asleep in the crib getting prepped for the blood! As soon as that is over, in mommy's arms he will be!!!

Here are a few pics mommy took last night--

We are on the other side :-)

Today was Logan's very anticipated surgery! We had to be here at Children's for 9:30 for all of the Pre-Op paper work and test. Originally his surgery was scheduled for 11:00, but due to bad weather and flooded street, it was pushed back. It was after 1 p.m. when they finally took him back. The operation went exceptionally well and he had minimal blood loss. Right now we are on the 4th floor recovering! So far he has done pretty good, kind of in and out of it, but overall well. There were a few occasions that he started crying pretty hard, but he was quickly comforted by my touch and voice, so the nurse said :-)!!! He is on pain medication every 2 hours, or as needed and Ibuprofin for the swelling! Pics from todays events will be posted soon!

It has begun....

Logan's surgery has finally begun! After getting here for 9:30 am he is finally on his way! Logan's Aunty Beth's mommy works here and she is giving us updates! She just told us that everything is going great and that he is so precious... which we already knew! Thank you God for the news so far!!!
